Sinchronize Your Sex Clocks

NotAgain.jpg Not Again picture by coupleschoice
Sometimes it seems that life just isn't fair.  Take for example the difference between a man's and a woman's sex drive.  Starting in his early teens a man's system blasts his body with a flood of hormones that will continue well into his early thirties.  But then slowly,. over time, the body's production of these chemicals drops off at a rate of about 10% every ten years starting at around age 20.  Still, for a good twenty years or more, sex  will be the number one thing on his mind 24/7.

In contrast, a woman's sex drive builds slowly over time.  Then, toward the end of her thirties, the alarm on her biological clock starts sounding and doesn't stop until she hits menopause.  In some kind of cruel irony, while her elevator is on the way up, his is on the way down, and sometime around their mid-forties they pass each other never to meet again until her libido starts it's inevitable slow decline.

Fortunately, nature supplies us with a wonderful pharmacy of libido enhancing plants, one of which is indigenous to Peru in South America.  Used in Peru for thousands of years as a food as well as for its libido boosting, health enhancing properties and high nutritional value, Maca is a cruciferous vegetable that can be traced back to the Incan empire, where warriors used it before entering into battle.  However, after battle, they were no longer allowed to consume maca in order to protect the women from their powerful libidos.

Still today it is used to ignite the sex drive and put a spark in the sex life.  One of the best super-foods it is increasingly becoming known around the world for promoting sexual health, libido and wellbeing.  Containing a high level of minerals, enzymes and all the essential amino acids which are essential for libido Maca is great for the sex life.  Maca balances the body, bringing health, vitality and sexuality.

The Peruvian government has invested a lot in scientific research to show the incredible libido enhancing properties of this plant.  A study Published in the Asian Journal of Andrology has shown that Maca increases libido and dramatically improves the sex drive.  Over a period of 3 months, Scientist Gustavo Gonzales of the Peruvian Cayateno Heredia University gave Maca to 9 volunteers.  He concluded that this libido enhancing herb raises sex drive by 180 to 200%, and doubled sperm production.  After 2 weeks of use, Maca powerfully increased "desire for sex", says Gonzales.  The same study also pointed out that Maca lowers blood pressure and that there are no negative side effects.

Other benefits of this potent libido herb include:

  • A massive increase in sexual activity.

  • Reduces menopausal symptoms.

  • Regulates women's hormonal irregularities: menstruation, eases period pains, alleviates menopausal symptoms.

  • Elevates the mood, eases depression, and improves mental ability and concentration.

  • Improves stamina, vitality and endurance.

  • Increases energy levels.

  • Decreases impotency and erectile dysfunctions.

  • Reduces male menopausal symptoms.

  • Increases the production of sperm cells.

  • Decreases stress.

  • The supplement industry uses both the dry roots and maca flour for different types of processing and concentrated extracts. A quick internet query will show dozens of different extracts available, each touting some enhanced efficaciousness for a traditional use or health claim. More recently, maca has been gelatinized using an extrusion process with the application of slight heat and pressure. Gelatinized maca is many fold stronger than powdered root, and is employed for mainly for therapeutic, medicinal and supplement purposes. It can also be used like maca flour. There is also freeze-dried maca juice, which is a juice squeezed from the macerated fresh root, and subsequently freeze-dried.

Maca is widely available as a stand-alone supplement or in combination with other natural ingredients.  The quality and potency of brands available in discount and drug stores varies widely and it's difficult to know whether the product you're buying will live up to your expectations.  Although slightly more expensive, those brands available in better nutrition stores such as GNC, Vitamin World, etc. or natural grocery stores such as Whole Foods usually have higher quality ingredients with greater potency.

Health Update 109 from Couples Choice Nutrition - Listen To The Music

If you’re one of the millions of Americans searching for relief from pain caused by arthritis or other chronic conditions, researchers have a suggestion for you: Put on some music and listen to your favorite tunes.

As far fetched as it sounds, according to a study published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, chronic pain patients who listened to an hour of music everyday for a week reported their levels of pain and disability all declined. They also felt more empowered to help themselves improve their condition which alleviated the feelings of depression that frequently afflict chronic pain sufferers.

The study included 60 adults from differing ethnic backgrounds who had reported pain in the neck, back and joints for a minimum of 6 months. Although many of the test subjects had received no specific diagnosis, of those who had arthritis was the most common cause however, all patients were using standard pain medications and/or therapy to treat their symptoms.
One third of the subjects were instructed to listen to music of the researcher’s choice and another third were told to listen to music of their own choosing while continuing the normal treatment regimen. The remaining third acted as the control group and received only their standard treatment.

The study found that, after just one week, patients in both music groups reported significantly greater improvements in pain, disability and depression than the control group. Among the music listeners there was a 20 percent reduction in pain rating and a 15 to 23% improvement in depression compared to those receiving only their standard treatment.

The reasons aren’t clear yet, but the addition of music therapy seems to make mainstream treatments like pain medication more effective. More than serving as a simple distraction from pain, listening to music may alter levels of stress related hormones promoting relaxation which in turn changes pain perception.

Amazingly the study indicates that it really doesn’t matter what kind of music you listen to, classical, popular, gospel, country, hip-hop, rock ‘n roll, as long as it makes you feel the way you want to feel. The good news is that, although the studies are on going there’s no reason people with chronic pain should wait to try a dose of music in addition to their current treatment.

Health Update 108 from Couples Choice

Health Update 108: The Wisdom of Nature - The Knowledge of Science

We live in interesting times. Scientists are working to develop nano-technology, intelligent machines that are so small they can be injected into our blood to assist our bodies in repairing injuries, fighting off infections and helping us to live longer, healthier lives. But at the same time, science is also giving us a greater understanding of how healing really works and we are beginning to recognize that the human body is a remarkable symphony. A human body can think thoughts, paint a picture, fight germs, remove toxins and make a baby - all at the same time. There is a genius inside all of us and this genius is the inner intelligence of the body that mirrors the wisdom of the universe.

Healing is real and is biologically orchestrated. We have a pharmacy inside all of us that makes wonderful drugs and this pharmacy is the product of our experience. And not just our experience, but the experience of our ancestors going back through billions of years of evolution. So if I run across a flu virus for the first time, my body knows how to make the precise antibody for it, even though I've never seen it before. However, one of my ancestors learned how to do it centuries ago and my body now has that knowledge. If I cut myself, clots begin to form immediately to stem the loss of blood, while my white blood cells rush to defend the area against invading infection and my body immediately begins closing the wound and repairing the damage. Everyday our cells mutate and theoretically we should all be dying of cancer but we have the precise mechanisms in our immune surveillance systems that get rid of those mutations. When we experience tranquility it's because our bodies have made a natural form of diazepam, which is nothing more than valium. So our bodies are the metabolic result of generation upon generation of experience.

When there is a disruption of these self-repair systems the result is illness. We can, with the proper modern techniques, replicate some of the repair mechanisms, but what we can never replicate is the complex self defense systems of our own bodies. For example, when we get cancer standard treatments are to poison it with chemotherapy, burn it with radiation or cut it out with surgery. Yet all these treatments also inflict damage on the body in addition to that done by the cancer and our bodies must then work to repair the damage caused by the cure as well as that caused by the disease. Yet when our self defense systems are working properly, these cancers are eliminated without us even noticing. And there is a built in redundancy so that one system repairs another should it get damaged or out of adjustment.

It's when there is a simultaneous disruption of these defense systems that we run into problems and end up with disease and illness. To be certain it is impossible for us to avoid every single threat to our wellness, however, there is much we can do to strengthen our bodies so that when we are faced with a threat our self-defense systems are better able to perform the task required of them. Many of us have food allergies or problems digesting certain foods and we know that if we eat these foods, our bodies will react sometimes quite violently. However, what we put in our bodies doesn't just affect our digestive system but carries through to every system, every organ and every single cell. We all know that smoking, alcohol and drugs have a detrimental effect on our bodies, and we also know that we need proper diet and exercise for optimum health. Yet in most cases, the effects of excess are not apparent until years later at which point we find that it's not just our stomach that's involved but also our heart, brain, joints, etc.

Our best defense is found in nature which doesn't say, "I'm vitamin B," or "I'm an anti-oxidant." Instead, nature says, "I'm an egg plant," or "I'm an apple," and by eating these whole foods we gain the whole benefit of the food, not just the benefit of the individual nutrients. Modern science can copy the components of nature, like vitamin K or C, but it can't duplicate the inherent nutrition of spinach or an orange. When you take just one active chemical out and synthesize it, you might take the intelligence out but you leave the wisdom of nature behind. Nature has a wisdom that is much more superior than isolated chemical intelligence and is the best natural pharmacy available.

But the reality of this fast paced world is that not all of us has time or resources to make eating from nature a reality 100% of the time. But that doesn't mean that we should give up entirely. Maybe we can't go completely natural, but we can eat a fresh salad loaded with deep greens with every meal. We can take the stairs instead of the elevator. We can eliminate artificial sweeteners from our diet. And for everything we can't do, we can supplement. Although the wisdom of nature is our first choice, the intelligence of the science of nutrition is also a powerful tool toward our health and well being.

At Couples Choice Nutrition, we're committed to bringing you the best vitamins, herbal, and nutritional supplements so that you can restore the balance that nature intended and you can live a long, healthy and fulfilling life.
